An artist rendering shows the exterior of the new Denison High School.
After months of drawings and design, a general outline of what the new Denison High School will look like has been released.
Steve Hulsey, the project’s lead architect, described the building’s feel as traditional and warm. Built on a split level, the classroom portion of the building will be two floors, designed with easy flow of student traffic in mind. The back portion of the building includes the fine arts space and theater, a competition gym and two practice gyms and some career technology classroom space.
The building with be split-level to work with the site grade. The back half will be level with the second floor of the classroom space. Access to the theater and gym for after-school events will be through the back of the building, allowing the halls of the classroom space to be secured. The indoor practice facility at the current DHS will be disassembled and moved to the new site.
District Superintendent Henry Scott said the new high school will be nearly twice the size of the existing high school. Its construction is being funded with an $80 million bond that was passed in 2011, which is also funding renovations to several other campuses in the district. The high school will be built on a site owned by the district at the intersection of highways 91 and 75.
Hulsey said there may still be minor changes to the design, but the basic layout is set.
