Mrs. Paul Carter was chosen best speaker in a contest held by the Toastmistress Club Monday evening at the Grayson Hotel. The title of her speech was “A Million Dollar Highway.” First and second place winners were Mrs. J.A. Bryce and Mrs. J.W. Beck. Judges were Mrs. Lloyd Cleary, Mrs. Bettie Ann Smith, Denison and Judge R.C. Vaughan and Bill Scarborough. Mrs. R.C. Vaughan served as toastmistress and Mrs. Dolly Carroll read a poem entitled “He Had a Hatchet, Little George.”

A large discount type retail store, part of a national chain, will be buiilt on Highway 75 North in Sherman, opening for business next fall. Although the Sherman representative of the developer handling the project declined to name the store, it was learned that it is to be K-Mart. A huge one-story building will be erected on an 11-acre site across Highway 75 from Holiday Inn motel. The store will have 862 parking spaces, about one-third the size of Sher-Den Mall’s parking area.

Col. Harmon and Mrs. Dorothy Howdeshell were chosen as “Sweethearts of The Renaissance” representing Independent Living on Feb. 14 in honor of Valentine’s Day. This award was bestowed on the couple during a wine and cheese reception held in the Great Hall. Col. Howdeshell retired from the Army in 1965 and Mrs. Howdeshell retired from the Sherman Independent School system as elementary supervisor in 1975. They moved to The Renaissance in 1989.
